Michael J. Nemet

About

An open-source science-fiction writer from rural Ohio, Michael James Nemet is the creator of the Korszak series of novels and its shared universe. Taking a unique approach to publishing, inspired by the Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) model, Michael openly shares his world-building, character, and story notes under Creative Commons licensing. This transparent approach allows fans and fellow creatives to explore, comment, and even create derivative works under the same license.

Creative Writer

Having grown up surrounded by some of the best science-fiction ever made, a technology enthusiast with a passion for tinkering, and experienced as a systems administrator, Michael uses his technical and scientific knowledge to create richly detailed and expansive worlds. With a particular focus on character-driven stories, Michael dives deep into every character’s psychology as he explores themes of redemption, trauma, and heroism. The combination of character focus and detailed world-building allows not only for a narrative that sticks with you long after the first page, but the open nature of his works further leaves it open to tell stories of your own.

Technology Enthusiast

When not immersed in vast multiverse of science-fiction, Michael will often indulge in building custom computers, tinkering around with Linux, min/maxing his favorite games, or deep-diving whatever random topic piqued his interest this week (yes, I will study for fun). It’s also not uncommon for many of these little side quests to fuel Michael’s creativity, often helping to flesh out minute details of his world-building. With a particular focus on technological development over time, he also has a bit of a habit of pontificating as to where technology will eventually lead.

Open Creator

As a regular beneficiary of many different open-source technologies and a lifelong member of numerous fandoms, Michael pays special attention to making sure people can enjoy his works in whatever way they like. Publishing his novels and repository under Creative Commons licensing, he enables his readers to enjoy his stories in whatever forms they like, not just allowing for derivative creations but actively encouraging it. Not wanting his creations to become just another tightly controlled property of a publishing house or studio, his endeavor is to do everything he can to foster creatives.

Blog

Well, if there’s one thing I can do as a writer, it’s talk (a lot). But, if I’m going to shout into the void, I might as well try to make it worth your time. Sometimes I’ll be sharing my craft, giving you a window into my processes and hopefully helping other writers. Other times, I’ll be breaking down and reviewing the latest piece of media I enjoyed or sharing another bit of my world-building for you to explore. And, of course, as a massive tech nerd and Linux enjoyer, I’ll have the occasional tech review, opinion piece, or “how to” for something I either got stuck on or just hard to find info on. If nothing else, I’m sure you’ll be entertained by my latest ramblings.

Korszak Book Series

Having grown up surrounded by some of the best science-fiction ever made, I know just how fun it can be to revel in a world that you love or even to tell stories of your very own in the setting. I most certainly don’t want to get in the way of this, if anything I want to encourage it. That’s why all my books and my entire repo use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike ([CC BY-SA 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/)) license. In addition to markdown copies of my finished books, my repo contains world-building notes, character bios, and just about anything else I can throw into a text file, all under the CC license. You’re more than welcome to explore it or even fork it and make your own creations. Think of it as a “Free and Open-Source Series”. Have fun! Oh, and obligatory spoiler warning goes here.
